Chelsea will be hoping to register successive wins and begin 2023 with a positive result when they travel to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest in a Premier League fixture on Sunday. The Blues are heading into the match on the back of a comfortable 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday, while Forest were thrashed 3-0 by Manchester United, on the same day. The victory helped Graham Potter’s side to move to eighth spot in the English top tier standings, having collected 24 points from 15 games, six points adrift of the top-four. The hosts, meanwhile, who have played a game more than the Londoners, are languishing at the relegation zone, with just 13 points to their name, one adrift of safety.

Prior to the World Cup break, Forest managed to stitch together a three-game unbeaten run across all competitions, having won two of those, against the likes of Tottenham (2-0), in an EFL Cup match, and Crystal Palace (1-0), in a league outing. After the break, the Reds resumed competitive action with a thumping 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers to enter the last-8 stage of EFL Cup. But the Tricky Trees’s unbeaten run came to an end when they got thrashed by Manchester United, courtesy of strikes from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred. It was Steve Cooper’s side’s ninth league-defeat of the campaign.
Chelsea, on the other hand, put two goals past Bournemouth without reply, on Tuesday. Kai Havertz scored the opener inside the opening 16 minutes, before Mason Mount doubled the lead, eight minutes later. The result helped the Blues to end a four-game losing streak. It was Chelsea’ first three points in the Premier League since October 16. The West Londoners have managed to register seven wins and three draws in the English top flight this season. Potter, who took charge of the Blues in September, is still trying to figure out a winning formula and the January transfer window is going to be crucial for the 47-year-old.
Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson, who missed the last game, because of ineligibility, is set to occupy the goal, with Worrall and Boly forming the central-defensive partnership in front of him. Meanwhile, the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Chiekhou Kouyate, Omar Richards, Giulian Biancone and Moussa Niakhate are sidelined with injuries. As for Chelsea, they will be without Armando Broja, N’Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Reece James and Ruben Loftus Cheek, who are occupying the treatment room. Hakim Ziyech and Mateo Kovacic have returned from World Cup duties and are expected to start on the bench.
Nottingham Forest probable starting lineup: Henderson, Williams, Worrall, Boly, Lodi, Yates, Freuler, Mangala, Johnson, Awoniyi, Dennis
Chelsea probable starting lineup: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Koulibaly, Silva, Cucurella, Gallagher, Jorginho, Mount, Sterling, Havertz, Pulisic
