Union SG will host Union Berlin in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie at Lotto Park on Thursday. The first leg in Germany last Thursday ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Union Berlin thrice came from behind to earn a draw last week, thanks to Josip Juranovic’s 42nd minute effort and two second-half goals from Robin Knoche and Sven Michel. Meanwhile the Belgian club found the back of the net courtesy of Victor Boniface’s brace and one goal from Yorbe Vertessen. It was the third meeting between these two sides in this edition of the competition, as they were paired together in Group D and both sides secured one 1-0 victories each. .

Three days after the six-goal thriller, Union SG secured an impressive come-from-behind 2-1 win over Belgian Pro League leaders Genk at Cegeka Arena, courtesy of first-half efforts from Bart Nieuwkoop and Simon Adingra. It was their 19th victory from 24 league-games, taking their points tally to 62, just five adrift of leaders Genk. The win against Genk extended Union 60’s unbeaten run to three games across all competitions, while winning two of those. Meanwhile, head coach Karel Geraerts will be confident of leading the club to a historical continental campaign.
Union Berlin, on the other hand, have recorded just one win from their last seven matches in all competitions. On Sunday, The Iron Ones shared the spoils against Wolfsburg at Volkswagen Arena despite breaking the deadlock through Kosip Juranovic’s penalty kick in the 72nd-minute. Die Eisernen have slipped down to the fourth spot in the German top flight standings because of poor run of form. Urs Fischer’s side have collected 45 points from 24 games, level with third-placed RB Leipzig but five adrift of second-placed Borussia Dortmund.
