On Sunday, first-half efforts from Gyorgy Kamaromi and Jakov Puljic gave a 2-0 lead to Puskas Akademia before Ferencvaros scored a late consolation-goal through Endr Botka. Despite the defeat, Stanislav Cherchesov’s side are occupying top spot in the Hungarian top flight standings, having collected 50 points from 23 games, 11 points clear of the chasing pack. Meanwhile, Ferencvaros performed above expectation to secure top spot in Group H and earned direct qualification to the last-16 of Europe’s second tier tournament.
Leverkusen, on the other hand, are sitting at the ninth position in the German top flight standings, with 34 points to their name from 24 games, six adrift of the top-six. Last time out, Xabi Alnoso’s side defeated Werder in the Bundesliga, thanks to Maitchel Baker’s 34th-minute effort and second-half strikes from Jeremie Frimpong and Adam Hlozek. It was their third consecutive win in all competitions. The Eternal Bridesmaids will be confident of protecting their two-goal lead on Thursday, but they will be aware about the hostile environment which they are likely to face in Hungary.
