Middlesbrough stunned Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of Josh Coburn’s extra time goal to enter the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Tuesday. Boro had defeated Manchester United in the fourth round and continued their fairytale run with 19-year-old Coburn’s 107th minute strike settling the tie. It was a convincing performance from the Championship side to go through to the next round while Spurs will end another season without a trophy after an abject display at Riverside stadium.

Spurs started the match on the driving seat as their wingers were too hot for the home side to handle. Ryan Sessegnon made a darting run down the left flank but his cross was intercepted with Harry Kane waiting to tap-in at the far post. And then Boro defender Dael made a fine tackle to deny Dejan Kulusevski after he surged into the area from the right flank.

Spurs had their best chance of the night on 39 minutes when Kulusevski set up Matt Doherty free and the Irishman got to the ball before goalkeeper Joe Lumley, who raced out of his net, but his shot at an open goal was wayward and went over the bar. Three minutes before break, Doherty dragged his effort wide.

It was a good defensive performance from the hosts as they kept their shape, offered very little space for the opposition to work with and finished the opening half goalless. After the interval, Boro came out with a bit more intent and could have taken the lead on 55 minutes when Jonny Howson’s corner kick found and unmarked Matt Crooks in front of goal but the 28-year-old’s header went over the crossbar.

The second half was proving to be an end-to-end affair with Eric Dier forcing Lumley into a fine save from a 25-yard free-kick before Kane put the ball inside the net from a corner kick, but the flag had gone up for a marginal offside.

Coburn’s winner

Three minutes from time, Marcus Tavernier burst into the box before laying the ball to Isaiah Jones on the right side of the penalty area, but the winger’s shot went straight to Hugo Lloris and the defender cleared the rebound.

The match went to extra time as both teams failed to find the back of the net. Spurs created the first chance in extra time when Kulusevski combined with Kane before firing his shot just wide of goal. Towards the end of the first half of extra time, Son Heung-Min’s near post flick from Kulusevski’s cross went straight to the keeper.

Substitute Coburn combined with Crooks on the right side of the box before smashing the ball past Lloris to spark wild celebrations at the stadium. Spurs tried to hit back immediately when Son tested Lumley at the neat post before Eric Dier’s deflected effort was kept out by the 27-year-old keeper. The hosts held on to the slender lead to complete a famous night.
