Harry Kane scored a last-gasp winner as Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester City 3-2 in the Premier League fixture at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The result has ignited the Premier League title race as leaders City are now just six points above second-placed Liverpool, who defeated Norwich City 3-1 earlier in the day. Meanwhile, Spurs moved to seventh place , just four points adrift of the top-four, having played two games less than fourth-placed Manchester United.

Tottenham had a dream start to the match, taking the lead inside the opening 4 minutes. Kane played a brilliant first-time pass to release Son Heung-min down the left flank. The South-Korean raced forward before squaring the ball for Dejan Kulusevski to slot home from inside the box.

In response, left-back Joao Cancelo dribbled past two Spurs players before firing a right-footed curler just wide. Few minutes later, Ilkay Gundogan’s effort hit the woodwork. City deservedly equalised on 32 minutes while Raheem Sterling’s cross wasn’t dealt properly by Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris and Gundogan fired home from the rebound.

Just before the hour-mark, Antonio Conte’s side restored the lead through Kane’s first goal of the night. Son cut inside from the left and delivered a perfect in-swinging ball for Kane to slot home with a first-time finish from inside the penalty area.

Few moments later, Kane could have had his second, when Son played nice little pass to pick the 28-year-old’s run between two defenders but Ederson was quickly off his line to deny the Englishman.

At the other end, Llloris made a full-stretch diving save to deny Gundogan before Spurs thought they had their third goal of the night when Kane put the ball inside the net from Kulusevski’s pass but VAR intervened and the latter was adjudged off-side during the buildup.

Kane’s winner

Towards the end of the regulation time, City had valid claims for a spot-kick when Bernardo Silva’s low cross struck into the arm of the diving Christian Romero and the VAR Darren England instructed the referee Anthony Taylor to consult his pitchside monitor, City were handed a penalty.

Riyad Mahrez stepped up and fired the ball past Lloris into the top corner to make the score 2-2 on 92 minutes. But there was time for more drama as Rodrigo Bentancur’ overhead ball released Kulusevski down the right flank, the Swedish winger delivered a perfect cross for Kane to head home past Ederson on 95 minutes.

Conte and his coaching staff erupted on the touchline. It was Spurs’ day, having completed a double over Manchester City for the first time since 2015-16 season.
