Mexico will begin their 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with a Group B-fixture against Honduras at NRG Stadium on Sunday. El Tri are heading into the match on the back of a third-place finish in the CONCACAF Nations League courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Panama in the playoff fixture on June 18, while La H suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Venezuela in a friendly last week. Mexico are going through bit of a tough period, having had three managers in the space of less than seven months. Recently, Argentine tactician Diego Coca, who took charge of team following a disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar under the stewardship of Gerardo Martino, has been sacked and Jaime Lozano is now the boss on interim basis.

Mexico, failed to progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1978. After that, El Tri failed to reach the final of the CONCACAF Nations League following a narrow 3-0 defeat to USA mid-way through June. Although Jesus Gallardo’s lone effort inside the opening four minutes helped El Tri get the better of Panama and secure a bronze medal in the competition on June18, Cocca was sacked by the Mexican federation two days later. Even though they are not in great form at the moment, the Tricolor are the most successful team in the history of the Gold Cup, having won the title eight times and suffering only ten defeats all-time in the competition. Meanwhile, Mexico finished runner-ups in the 2021 edition of the tournament in USA, losing 1-0 to the hosts in the final courtesy of Miles Robinson’s 117th-minute effort.

Honduras, on the other hand, were thrashed 3-0 by Mexico in the quarter-final stage of the Gold Cup two years ago. Nevertheless, the Los Catrachos are heading into the match on the back of some poor run of form, having won just one of their last five games across all competitions. They had a disastrous 2022 World Cup qualification campaign, not registering a single win in the final round for the first time, earning just four points altogether. After that, Diego Vasquez took charge of team and managed to restore some parity in the CONCACAF Nations League, finishing second in Group C of League A, three points behind Canada. As of now, La Bicolor are going through a transition phase and Vasquez has picked up mix of young and experienced players in order to make the transition as smooth as possible.
