Mexico and Costa Rica will battle for a place in the semi-finals of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup this Saturday at AT&T Stadium. El Tri are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Qatar on matchday three, while the Costa Ricans secured a thrilling 6-4 win over Martinique. The victory helped Los Ticos to secure second spot in Group C, having collected four points from three games, three adrift of group-winners Panama. The Mexicans, meanwhile, won Group B, with six points to their name, two more than second-placed Qatar.

Mexico went into their final group-fixture against Qatar, having already secured a place in the quarterfinals, courtesy of taking a maximum of six points from their opening two games against Honduras (4-0) and Haiti (3-1). El Tri went behind through Hazem Shehata’s 27th-minute strike and then tried their best to level the score, recording 25 shots with six of them on target, but the Maroons stood firm to hand the Mexicans their first defeat under interim manager Jaime Lozano. El Tri had finished runner-ups in the last edition of the competition and will be bidding to go one step further and lift the trophy this time around. Meanwhile, Mexico have not lost a Gold Cup quarter-final match since falling 2-1 versus Colombia in 2005.
Costa Rica, on the other hand, squeezed their way into the quarter-finals, having got the better of Martinique in a must-win encounter on Tuesday. Los Ticos started off their tournament with a surprise 2-1 defeat to Panama on June 26, before sharing the spoils against El Salvador (0-0), four days later. And then, Luis Fernando Suarez’s men defeated Les Matinino thanks to goals from Kendall Watson, Francisco Calvo, Juan Pedro Vargas, Joel Campbell, Anthony Conteras and Diego Campos. Meanwhile, Saturday will be the 13th successive appearance for this team in the quarter-finals of this competition, with La Sele losing out at this stage in 2021 and 2019.
