The 2023 Gold Cup quarter-finals begin on Saturday night as Panama take on Qatar at AT&T Stadium in the third ever meeting between these two sides. The Canal Men are heading into the match on the back of a 2-2 draw against El Salvador on matchday three on Tuesday, while the Maroons secured narrow 1-0 win over CONCACAF heavyweights Mexico. The victory helped the AFC outfit to secure second spot in Group B, having collected four points from three games, and earn spot in the last eight stage. Panama, meanwhile, stormed their way into the knockout round, finishing unbeaten and top of Group C, taking seven points, three more than second-placed Costa Rica.

Panama put together another solid performance against La H on Tuesday and won their group for the first time since 2013. The Canal Men started the tournament with a pair of 2-1 wins against Costa Rica and Martinique, before sharing the spoils against El Salvador in their final group-fixture. Thomas Chrtistiansen’s men went behind for the first time in this edition of the tournament courtesy of La Selecta striker Bryan Gil’s fourth-minute effort on Tuesday. Although goals from Fidel Escobar and Ismael Diaz helped Los Canaleros take the lead, Mayor Gill’s 91st-minute effort denied Panama a third consecutive victory in this edition of the competition. Nevertheless, Christiansen’s men have been very impressive in the group stages, attempting 17 shots on target and scoring six goals in three outings, and thereby have definitely earned the tag of a dark horse.
Qatar, on the other hand, had reached the semi-finals of the 2021 Gold Cup and will be bidding to go at least one step further this time around. However, the Maroons had to dig deep to progress from their group this time around, getting the better of El Tri in a must-win match on Sunday, while Honduras did them a favour by defeating Haiti 2-1 in the other Group B encounter. After taking just one point from their opening two games, Carlos Queiroz’s men needed to beat last edition’s runner-ups Mexico in their final group match and they did just that, thanks to Hazam Shehata’s lone goal in the first half. Meanwhile, Qatar have never lost an international encounter versus Panama, securing a 2-1 win in a friendly in November last year, while playing out a 3-3 draw in the previous edition of the Gold Cup.
