Manchester City were just too good for Manchester United on Sunday, as the visitors ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Old Trafford. At times, it felt like ‘men against boys,’ as the home side was nowhere near the level displayed by the visitors. Erling Haaland was once again the hero of the night after scoring a brace and setting up Phil Foden for a third. However, the evening did not belong to the tall centre-forward alone.

Bernardo Silva was an unsung hero during the 90 minutes at Old Trafford. He was at the heart of almost everything Manchester City did right against Manchester United. Unsurprisingly, manager Pep Guardiola was all praise for the Portuguese midfielder, who has created a reputation for being one of their most consistent players on the pitch in recent years.

“He doesn’t have any tattoos or a nice car – he is an incredible player for us. He loves to play at Old Trafford. He’s played as false 9 in the past and he has the ability to make a lot of passes. He is so intelligent – everyone loves him, and it was another exceptional performance. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve trained a lot and he’s one of the best,” Guardiola, quoted by the club’s website, said after the match.

Pep Guardiola on the second goal

Guardiola then went into detail to explain how important the second goal scored by Haaland was in the match. “The second goal helped us a lot. We talked at half-time and thought they would be more aggressive. We made two incredible build-ups with Ruben and Ederson. After we dropped and after Bernardo and Jack made a good action and those were the key points of the game. The first seven minutes we lost the ball because we didn’t do simple things. We allowed them to make a transition. The second half was brilliant,” he explained.

He added: “Last season we lost, this season we won, and it is always special to win at Old Trafford. The Brighton game was so important after the defeat at Arsenal. It was important to understand the way we have to play. We have to be more precise with the passing. Of course today, its special for the scenario because we won at Old Trafford. We are so proud.”

Meanwhile, goalscoring hero Erling Haaland spoke about the importance of the win, as he also divulged what he went through while successfully taking the penalty for the opener. “Amazing. Fantastic win. The game was incredible today, the whole team and everything. I felt it a little bit, pressure for the penalty. I had the pressure and I scored and it was a fantastic feeling. It was a nice celebration, for both of them. It was a nice game. It was an incredible save right before the half time. He did another fantastic save in the second half when I chipped it, he saved it with his head. It is what it is. We won,” he added.
