Arsenal did what they had to do to get past Luton Town in the Premier League. Going into the mid-week fixture, the Gunners were the overwhelming favourites against the relegation-battling side. After being promoted to the top division, it has not been easy for Luton. While they have gotten some eye-catching results along the way, it has largely been a season of struggle for them. As a result, Mikel Arteta’s side were expected to be the favourites in this contest and they lived up to that tag quite well.

The home side made a quick start to the proceedings and had the game under control from kick-off. They got their opener midway through the first half via Martin Odegaard. Arsenal maintained the pressure and doubled their lead at the stroke of half-time through an own goal. With no more goals to come in the second period, the Premier League contest finished 2-0 in favour of the Gunners.

There were plenty of positives to take from the outing for the home side. While it wasn’t a standout Arsenal performance, they did what was needed to get a comfortable victory. It is even more impressive when one looks at the starting XI since the home side made some big changes to the lineup. Some of the new guys who came into the playing XI produced solid displays for Arsenal, leaving their manager Mikel Arteta impressed.

Starting by talking about the performances of Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson, Arteta, quoted on Arsenal.com, said after the match, “I look at my players in my squad in a different way – it’s a joy to have them fit. If we want to utilise the squad and maximise what they have, they have to play. I think it was the right moment to do that and they responded really well. I’m so happy with that because I think we’ve won again, especially with a few players with good confidence, physically with the rhythm right now and they’re going to be really important for us.”

Mikel Arteta on Emile Smith Rowe

Asked whether the outing will improve Smith Rowe’s confidence, Arteta replied, “I think a lot. I love him as a player. It’s a joy to watch him, how he moves, how he changes direction, how physical he was today as well without the ball. He won a lot of duels and he was thinking with that killer instinct to play forward and to make things happen and when Emile is in that moment it’s very difficult to stop him. Today he helped us a lot to win the game.”

The Arsenal manager then shifted his attention to Martin Odegaard, as he spoke about the importance of Odegaard in his lineup. “He’s a really important player – we needed that balance and as well the chemistry that certain players have because it’s how they train as well, and how we build those connections and relationships, and Martin is there to connect everything well in how we play.”
