Manchester United had a busy summer in 2023, as they signed quite a few players in that window. Some of the big-name signings include Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount. It was quite surprising to see the Red Devils go for Mount. After making a name at Chelsea, the English international was expected to stay at Stamford Bridge for as long as he could. Not many expected Mount to swap the Blues for the Reds this soon in his career.

However, it has not been a season to remember for Mason Mount. The English international has been out injured for most of this campaign and has played only a handful of games. Even when the 25-year-old has played, it is unclear what is Mount’s best position in the Manchester United Starting XI. He did return to action from a lengthy injury at the weekend and scored a late injury-time goal away to Brentford. However, it was not to be United’s winner, as the home side scored an even later equaliser through Kristoffer Ajer.

Manager Erik ten Hag was upset that it did not turn out to be the winning goal for Mount. “I was so happy for him. But so sorry for him also that it wasn’t the winner. He deserved that moment of glory, maybe it was such a small moment but, for a player who came in and suffered so many injuries and worked so hard all the time, and had so many setbacks, it was so frustrating. And then you think you’ve scored a winner so we were disappointed when we conceded that goal that makes it 1-1. It makes a totally different mood, as you can imagine,” he told MUTV.

What is the immediate priority for Mason Mount?

Ten Hag further stated that the important thing for Mount currently is to remain fit. “He is a fantastic football player but it is important, first, that he is getting and keeping fit because he has had three injuries, as we have seen now with Licha [Lisandro Martinez]. You always want to avoid [this], so we have to do this very carefully and so that is the first objective, to keep him fit. At the same time, we want to use him so that he can have benefit and contribute to the team, like he did on Saturday, where he had an impact,” he later stated in his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s clash with Chelsea in the Premier League.

The manager also explained how it was imperative for the club to keep hold of the late lead against Brentford. Even though United did not play well that day, ten Hag feels United should have seen it out and won the game. “I have been in football long enough to know, and what some of you should also understand, is that such things happen. Sometimes, you are not playing good but we are Man United and you still have to win. When you are winning, you can’t give it away in the way we did, that is the biggest disappointment for me. We also have to see the trends line over a long period and I would say, from Christmas, on it has been positive. We keep going,” he explained.
