Manchester City bounced back from the weekend frustrations by securing a scintillating 4-1 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League. It was a much-needed three points for the defending champions after they were held to a goalless draw at the weekend by Arsenal. City, Liverpool and the Gunners are currently involved in an intriguing three-way title race. With not many games left till the end of the season, every point counts in this period.

Besides, it was not going to be easy for any side to face Aston Villa, who are themselves involved in an intense Premier League top-four race with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. Hence, Manchester City knew that they have to be on top of their game to get the three points, and they did just that with a professional display. The star of the night was Phil Foden after he scored a sensational hat-trick.

Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden

The English international has continued his impressive form by taking his tally to 21 goals for the season in all competitions and he also has 10 assists. After the game, manager Pep Guardiola went on to heap praise on the 23-year-old midfielder. “What can I say, he scored three goals? He didn’t start well. The goal helped him a lot for the mood in the second half. When he plays in a central position he has a sense of goal. Everyone has their own skills and talents and Phil has assists and goals in that position. He proved it again,” Guardiola, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

While showering praise on Foden, Guardiola also went into detail to explain where the versatile midfielder can still improve. “He can do whatever he wants. He’s a really top class player. He is open minded. He has to understand the game. He has to focus in some things. Sometimes he is a little bit distracted in what he has to do defensively but he has a natural talent. A gift,” he explained.

The manager added: “He is special for the pace and work ethic. He has an incredible sense of goal. You have the feeling when he is attacking the last line that he is going to score. It’s not easy to find it and that’s why he is so special in those central positions.”

Guardiola then shifted his attention to the win over Aston Villa and spoke about the closely-fought Premier League title race, which he feels could go right down to the wire. “If we win all our games it will be down to the last day because they are not five, six, seven points in front. It will not be easy. I see Liverpool and Arsenal dropping points but you never know. We have to show up and do our job and don’t regret that we should have won that game because they lost the game after. We cannot do anything. We cannot control what they do. We have to win our games, that’s all we can do,” he stated.
