Manchester United have registered back-to-back victories for the first time this season after beating Crystal Palace 3-0 in the Carabao Cup. This comfortable win comes on the back of a hard-fought 1-0 success away to Burnley in the Premier League at the weekend. There are a lot of positives to take from the mid-week win, which will undoubtedly make the home supporters extremely pleased.

They were not the only ones pleased with the result. Manager Erik ten Hag was equally happy in the manner at which Manchester United got their business done against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. “Oh, it’s a good night, as you said. And I think we played quite well and dominated the game. So that was what we were looking for,” he was quoted as saying to the media after the match.

He added: “But I also said disappointment and frustration [from the losses]. But the mood is then dropping. The spirit was always good, togetherness was always there and is there. And you could also see that today. And we make a step forward in Burnley, how we defend, how we do that, and togetherness today on the ball and we make another step. So still a lot to come, but we are making [progress] and we are moving forward.”

Erik ten Hag on Sofyan Amrabat

Ten Hag was also all praise for Sofyan Amrabat in his full debut. Reacting to the midfielder’s commanding performance, the manager said, “Yeah, but that’s why we play him there and I know he’s capable. I said before, he is a player [who] if the team needs him, he will play there. And then he gives contribution to the team and that is quality, but also qualities, also then the energy and the dynamic he brings.”

The manager then spoke about two more midfielders. On Mount’s substitution, he said, “Definitely [we substituted him as a precaution]. Before he’s returning from an  injury and we have to build this up. And when we go too quickly, you get the drop. And we want to avoid that. And I think his performance was very good.” On Casemiro, he added, “You know the qualities of Casemiro and he adds so much to the team in his distribution, but also in his arriving. And now, of course, it’s from a corner. And his heading is a threat. But I think on the third goal [he got the] assist.”

Ten Hag also reserved special praise for goalkeeper Andre Onana. “Of course, it’s always when you [get a] clean sheet, it will always give the ‘keeper confidence, especially when you contribute, when you have some great saves, like on Saturday, when he had that header, it was a very important save there, and now in the end, he had two fantastic saves. So that will help and build his confidence. But he has personality, he deals with situations, with pressure, he can do that and I think he’s starting to do that now,” he explained.
