Erik ten Hag will make his Premier League debut as Manchester United manager when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Red Devils will hope to put their disastrous 2021-22 season behind them and start the new campaign on a positive note. United will head into a new era under ten Hag’s leadership as they look to mount a top-four challenge this campaign after finishing 13-points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur last season. They will be up against a resilient Brighton side that have exceeded expectations in the league last campaign.

Manchester United were well below-par last season, frequently finding themselves at the receiving end of shocking results. It resulted in their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked, while interim manager Ralf Rangnick was neither able to change the tide. Under ten Hag, United showed some promise in the pre-season, producing a few eye-catching performances. However, their first real challenge will be against a Brighton side that finished a respectable ninth last campaign. In the end, Brighton’s total tally of 51 points was just seven behind Manchester United.

Possible Lineups

A lot of players were linked with Manchester United in the summer, however, only three of them have joined the club so far. Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez’s addition might fill certain gaps in the squad but not necessarily solve all of their concerns. Besides, the future of their star striker Cristiano Ronaldo has drawn unnecessary attention to the club. Ronaldo has played just 45 minutes in pre-season, yet he could start on Sunday due to Anthony Martial’s injury.

Besides, there are also question marks over Jadon Sancho’s participation, which could allow young players such as Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho to get a look into the first-team squad. Meanwhile, Brighton will have to make do without the services of Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella, with the duo departing the club this summer. New signings Julio Enciso, Simon Adingra and Levi Colwill will definitely give them a big boost. However, they will miss the injured Jakub Moder on Sunday.

Manchester United possible line-up: De Gea, Dalot, Maguire, Varane, Malacia; Fred, McTominay, Fernandes, Sancho, Rashford, Ronaldo

Brighton & Hove Albion possible line-up: Sanchez, Veltman, Dunk, Webster, Lamptey, Gross, Mwepu, March, MacAllister, Trossard, Welbeck
