Manchester City will begin their Premier League title defence with a tough assignment at West Ham United on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side would be keen to bounce back from the Community Shield disappointment when they travel to the London Stadium. However, the Citizens will be well aware of the difficult task at hand when they face David Moyes’ side. In recent seasons, West Ham have made a name for themselves in making life extremely difficult for their opponents and have been able to match the big boys on equal footing. Hence, Man City would have to be at the top of their game to get the three points on Sunday.

At one point last season, Manchester City looked to be running away with the Premier League crown. However, Liverpool’s impressive run of form in the second half of the campaign saw the gap to the top spot reduce to just one point. To Man City’s credit, they held their nerve to produce a remarkable final-day comeback and seal the league trophy. They won both their pre-season games but lost to Liverpool in the Community Shield last weekend. Meanwhile, West Ham surprised many people last campaign to finish seventh in the table. They also went deep in the Europa League knockout stage.

Possible Lineups

Manchester City did their business early in the transfer window. They have brought in four first-team players but the standout one was the arrival of Norwegian centre-forward Erling Braut Haaland from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund. He will fill a major hole up front, which was vacated by Sergio Aguero last campaign. Besides, they have also signed Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega. However, they have to make do without the services of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko after both players left for Arsenal.

On Sunday though, they will likely miss the centre-back pair of Aymeric Laporte and John Stones. Laporte could be out for a while following a knee injury. On the other hand, West Ham have made some smart buys in the transfer window. Forward Gianluca Scamacca is joined by Maxwel Cornet, Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd and Flynn Downes. Scamacca is unlikely to start on Sunday but it is not clear how many of the others could be involved in the match. One thing is sure Aguerd will miss the match, as he will join Angelo Ogbonna on the sidelines.

West Ham United possible line-up: Fabianski, Coufal, Zouma, Dawson, Cresswell, Rice, Soucek, Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals, Antonio

Manchester City possible line-up: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo, Rodri, Phillips, De Bruyne, Foden, Alvarez, Haaland
