Manchester United had a Boxing Day to remember after producing a scintillating comeback against an in-form Aston Villa side. The Red Devils overcame a 2-0 half-time deficit to defeat Villa 3-2 at the jam-packed Old Trafford on Tuesday night. The game had everything from great strikes to brilliant saves and an offside goal. With not a lot to separate both sides, United’s resilience paid off in the second half.

After a brace by Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund sealed the comeback for Manchester United with a neat left-footed finish to set the stadium on fire. That strike was indeed Hojlund’s first Premier League goal. There could not have been a better moment for the Danish international to score his first league goal for United than against an in-form Aston Villa side to complete a remarkable comeback.

Rasmus Hojlund on his first Premier League goal

He was part of a front three that was too hot to handle for Villa on Tuesday night. After the game, Hojlund expressed his delight in getting his first league goal for the club as well as guiding the team to victory. “It’s been a while. I am happy. Like the manager said, I’ve scored a couple in the Champions League, of course, but it’s been a while in the Premier League now,” the young striker told Amazon Prime.

He further added: “I’m happy to get the first one and can hopefully just build on that and keep going. I’m happy for the attackers as well today – we showed a lot of character and we showed a lot of confidence as well. I am the happiest man alive. You can see with the celebrations. Like Garna [Garnacho] says, we believe until the end, and we showed a lot of character again today.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was equally pleased with Hojlund breaking his duck in the league. He remains confident that more goals will come from the striker in the future. “It’s very important for a striker. We know he’s capable as he’s proved it in the Champions League. He will also score goals in the Premier League so I’m very happy. I know it will give him confidence from that point on. He will score more goals,” he stated.

The manager added: “You know you have the potential and you know he’s demonstrated his ability on the highest level and there will come a point where he will also score in the Premier League. Today, it’s there and I’m sure, when one is in, more will come. It’s about belief and you have to take that and deserve that yourself by your investment. Keep believing and it will come. I talked with him. He’s so happy. He deserved that reception [from the fans]. He is always so determined to score a goal and I think that’s the character a striker needs.”
