Manchester City produced a professional display to get past Newcastle United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The defending champions sailed into another semi-final of the competition after securing a 2-0 win over the Magpies. Both goals were scored by Bernardo Silva in the first half, as City saw off any threat from the visitors in the second half to reach the last-four of the domestic English competition.

Phil Foden on Bernardo Silva

After the match, Phil Foden, who was one of the stars of the game, gave an honest assessment of the FA Cup win over Newcastle United. He started by heaping praise on Bernardo Silva. “A pleasure – one of the best players I’ve ever played with. The way he controls games, he’s so intelligent. He’s a pleasure to play with,” the English international, quoted on the club’s website, said after the game.

He then went onto speak about the consistency, as well as the hunger shown by his teammates. “It shows that we’re still consistent and wanting to win trophies. Being a part of this group – they surprise me all the time, wanting to keep fighting, even after last year. It’s nice to see. It’s exceptional – it’s a special group and we just have to think about the next game and not think too far ahead. It shows how successful we still are, and we are still there in all competitions, we’re delighted,” he explained.

Speaking about his own performances, Foden said, “The more I play, the more I feel comfortable and the more fitness I feel. I’m delighted with the minutes I’m playing, and I want to continue to play and try and help the team as much as possible. I’ve grown as a player – playing with the best players in the world and keep getting better in training. Somewhere in the centre – more like [against Newcastle] and coming inside, that’s my favourite position. I still think there’s a lot more to my game that I can improve – I think I can go even better and I’m going to keep working hard on the training pitch and try to show that in the games,” he elaborated.

Pep Guardiola on the FA Cup win

Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his happiness with the team’s consistency in this competition in recent years. “To expect [to be] coming back from the last international break with two months left and be in contention for all the titles means a lot. People talk about the Premier League and Champions League but when you win four Carabao Cups in a row and get to six FA Cup semi-finals in a row, this team and this club has something special,” Guardiola said in his post-match press conference.

He added: “We want to win all of them but sometimes it is not possible because of the quality of the opponents and the schedule we have. I remember playing away in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and then at Wembley is so difficult. To arrive in your best condition in those situations is difficult but we were there. Always you can have a bad night but when you have six times in a row [FA Cup semi-finals], you have less bad nights. This is the consistency that proves people who doubt the team wrong.”
