Two of the heavyweights of French football will be up against each other on Friday night, when Lyon host Monaco in a Ligue 1 fixture at Groupama Stadium. Both sides are aiming to enhance their respective bids for European football. The hosts are currently occupying seventh spot in the French top flight standings, having collected 56 points from 35 games, four adrift of the top five. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the fourth position, with 65 points to their name, eight shy of third-placed Marseille.

Lyon are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Clermont Foot. Les Gones suffered their 11th league-defeat of the season at Stade Gabriel Montpied last weekend despite taking the lead through Alexandre Lacazette’s 22nd-minute effort. Prior to that, Laurent Blanc’s men secured a thrilling 5-4 victory over Montpellier thanks to Lacazette’s haul and one goal from Dejan Lovren. It was their 16th top flight victory of the season. With 15 points taken from their last seven matches, Lyon will be confident of breaking into the European places before the end of the season. With three matches remaining, Blanc’s men are four points away from the fifth-placed Lille, and the Europa Conference League appears to be the most likely destination. After the game against Monaco, Lyon will host Reims, before ending their campaign away to Nice.

Monaco, on the other hand, will be looking to strengthen their hold on the Europa League spot, as they are trailing the top three by eight points. The Red and whites are sitting five points clear of fifth-placed Lille. Philippe Clement’s men have been inconsistent in the months of April and May, recording three wins, two draws and two defeats from their last seven games. With just 11 points taken from last 21 on offer, Monaco have slipped out of the Champions League spot (top three), and find themselves trailing second-placed Lens by ten points. The Red and Whites have won 19 top flight games this term and their recent success came away to Angers (2-1) almost two weeks ago courtesy of goals from Aleksandr Golovin and Myron Boadu. Last weekend, Monaco played out a goalless draw against Lille.
