Liverpool were unable to reach their previous heights in the 2022-23 season, as the club experienced a largely underwhelming campaign. Failing to finish in the top four places of the Premier League was a major shock for many supporters and pundits. They also suffered early eliminations in cup competitions. For a team that has played at such a high level over the last few years, it was nothing short of a forgettable season.

Diogo Jota had his own battles to fight in the 2022-23 season, as he was injured for a large portion of the campaign. The Portuguese forward did have an impact on his return from injury but it was not enough for the Reds to finish in Champions League places in the Premier League. Despite their difficult run in last season, Jota is confident of overturning their fortunes in the new campaign, as he believes a team like Liverpool should be fighting for trophies.

He gave an insight into the difficult task of playing at Anfield, as to what makes Liverpool’s home stadium special and why opponents struggle to play there. Jota himself has played at the ground as an opposition during his time with Wolverhampton Wanderers. “When everyone is together at Anfield it is a massive obstacle to overcome,” he said in the May edition of WALK ON, the club’s official eMagazine.

I know how hard it is to play there: Diogo Jota

“The fans’ support of the team is permanent and if they have anything to say it will be after the game and not during it. During games they genuinely try to help the team and have an impact on the game. I have been to Anfield as an opponent so I know how hard it is to play there. That’s the feeling we have as well because we can see in a lot of games how hard it is for the opponents to try to stay in the game or overcome everything that can happen.”

Diogo Jota is happy with where his journey has taken him so far in his career, however, he wants to do more next season. “As a player you obviously always want to achieve more and more. I feel I’ve reached a level that allows me to look back and realise I’ve completed a great journey to get here and I should be proud of where I am. Now it is for us to create new history from next season. I am always motivated to do my best possible and as a Liverpool player it comes with a lot of responsibility. We are a club that needs to fight for titles and next season we have a perfect opportunity to do that,” he added.
