It has been nothing short of an impressive season for Liverpool this time around. The Reds have exceeded expectations in every competition they have played this campaign. They have already won a trophy after beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final in dramatic fashion. Apart from that, Liverpool are involved in a close three-horse title race in the Premier League and are also doing well in the Europa League.

However, the only blip has been in the form of the FA Cup. Liverpool suffered a shock extra-time defeat to rivals Manchester United in the quarter-final stage. Otherwise, it has been a season to remember for them till now. There have been situations when the Reds have suffered multiple injuries but even then, they have continued to maintain their high standards. One such player who has benefitted from injuries to first-team players is Caoimhin Kelleher.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper has largely been a back-up to first-choice keeper Alisson Becker. However, the Brazilian goalkeeper is injured now, thereby allowing Kelleher to enjoy a run of games in between the posts. Even though Kelleher’s chances have been limited in the first team, he has often looked at ease whenever he has been called to play. The Republic of Ireland international gives a lot of credit for that to manager Jurgen Klopp and heaped praise on him.

Caoimhin Kelleher on Jurgen Klopp

When asked about the biggest lessons he has learned from Klopp, Kelleher, who was quoted in a recent matchday programme, said, “I think he’s always been one just to tell you to always keep your confidence and things like that. I think whatever happens, sometimes you might not have a good game or you might not be feeling the best about your game, but he’s always been a positive figure for me and always instills such confidence in me that I’ve always kept that belief in myself.”

He added: “He’s really given me a lot of belief just to keep my confidence all the time and believe in how good of a player I am. Obviously he’ll be a massive, massive miss. He’s the only manager I’ve had here, so it will be a bit strange but the memories will be really good to look back on. He’s given me my chance here and I’ve won trophies in 2022 and this year with him and hopefully maybe a few more before this season is out as well, so it’s been really good and obviously he will be a miss.”

Klopp had recently announced that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season. Asked about the added incentive the players feel due to that decision, Kelleher said, “I think maybe a little bit. There is that extra one per cent that we want to go on and give him a send-off he deserves, but I think from the start of the season we’ve had the objective to try to win trophies this year. We know how good we are as a squad, so I think that’s remained the same really. We just want to keep doing well, take it game by game and hopefully those trophies will come.”
