Levi Colwill is going through his best phase as a professional career after enjoying a good level of success, which has also gained him international recognition. The young defender has got his maiden call-up to the senior England squad. It is a big moment for the 20-year-old centre-back who has been involved with the national team in the junior categories. It is largely due to his spell on loan with Brighton and Hove Albion last season and with Chelsea this term.

His first loan spell was with Huddersfield Town and then he followed it up by playing for Brighton again on loan. He performed very well during these loan spells, which had convinced Mauricio Pochettino to keep him at Chelsea for this campaign. He has impressed a lot for the Blues so far in the new Premier League season. After being called up to England, Colwill spoke about his delight in linking up with the senior side.

Levi Colwill on Mauricio Pochettino

Besides, Colwill narrated the impact Mauricio Pochettino has had on him and how much he has helped him. “Working with him, I know I’m going to improve. He’s such a good manager and he will push me. That’s what I need. I need someone there to give me that kick up the bum and say, “Keep going”. That’s what he does,” Colwill, quoted by the club’s website, said while on international duty with England.

He added: “The big thing for me is on the first day I came in [for pre-season], he put an arm around me and showed me that he respects me as a person and also as a player. That allows me to work my hardest and makes me want to play my best for him. That’s a big difference, him showing that there are two sides. The majority of managers may just look at you like a footballer, he doesn’t. That helps me play my best football.”

Colwill also gave credit to couple of senior players at Chelsea, who he believes played an important role in him settling at Stamford Bridge this season. “At Chelsea, I also have Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva, they are leaders in the team for a reason. Their job is to help the young players [in the squad] and I have had that,” he explained.

Levi Colwill aims to be in Euro 2024 squad

It is unclear how much Colwill will be involved in the international break. However, he hopes to make the most of his chances and eventually gain a place in the England squad for Euro 2024. “Playing for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, it’s got to be an aim to be in the England team come the Euros. There’s still a long time until that comes, so I need to keep pushing myself,” he added.

“Every time you come here it’s an opportunity to impress Gareth. It’s like any career, you’ve got to impress and hopefully I get the chance to. Training with the squad in June [ahead of the qualifier against Malta] was a big blessing. I enjoyed it so much and obviously getting formally called up now is amazing, a dream come true.”
