Latvia will host Moldova in a UEFA Nations League fixture at the Skonto Stadium on Thursday evening. Both sides were last in action in June, in the Nations League, with the hosts securing a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein, while Moldova got the better of Andorra 2-1. Latvia are currently occupying top spot in League D Group 1, having accumulated a maximum 12 points from four games, while the visitors are sitting one place behind them, with seven points. Moldova desperately needs a victory in Riga to have any chance of leapfrogging their opponents into top spot in the standings.

Latvia  began their 2022-23 Nations League campaign with a 3-0 win over Andorra, before getting the better of Liechtenstein (1-0) and Moldova (4-2). And then in the reverse fixture against Liechtenstein, Vladislavs Gutkovskis’ brace helped the 11 Vilki secure all three points. Even a draw against Moldova on Thursday might be enough for Latvia to earn promotion to League C from the bottom tier.

Moldova, on the other hand, were relegated from League C last time out in the competition, after only picking up one point from six games. Meanwhile this term, the Selection have recorded two wins and one draw thus far. In their last outing against Andorra, Mihail Caimacov and Ion Nicolaescu netted from the penalty spot to secure the win for Serghei Clescenco’s side. The reverse fixture against  Latvia had ended in a 4-2 defeat and the Selection now needs to win the return leg in order to have any chance of bouncing back to League C.

Nicolaescu could lead the line with Cojocaru and Motpan in support.

Latvia probable starting lineup: Steinbors, Savalnieks, Cermorodijs, Dubra, Jurkovskis, Ikaunieks, Zjunins, Tobers, Ciganiks, Gutkovskis, Uldrikis,.

Moldova probable starting lineups: Railean, Craciun, Bolohan, Amas, Jardan, Lonita, Caimacov, Reabciuk, Motpan, Nicolaescu, Cojocaru
