Iran qualified for their third successive World Cup finals courtesy of finishing on top of Group A ahead of South Korea in AFC qualifying. Team Melli got the better of Lebanon 2-0 in their final qualification match on March 29. After that, Carlo Quieroz’s side have recorded one win, a draw and a defeat in three friendlies. Iran’s last outing against Senegal on September 27 ended in a 1-1 draw courtesy of Sardar Azmoun’s 64th-minute equaliser. Prior to that, Iran secured a narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay through Mehdi Temremi’s 79th-minute strike. Team Melli are preparing for their sixth ever World Cup finals appearance. Nicaragua, on the other hand, have never qualified for the global event in their entire history. La Azul y Blanco failed to reach the final qualifying round in CONCACAF’s section. The Central American outfit’s last outing against Ghana ended in a 1-0 defeat courtesy of Abdul Issahaku’s goal.
Iran’s key players are still busy with their club duties and will join the national side only after the calendar officially breaks for the World Cup on Sunday. Therefore Quieroz is expected to pick a team of exclusively Iran and Qatar-based players on Thursday. In the absence of Porto striker Taremi, Mohebi could spearhead the attack. Amiri and Torabi could occupy the flanks, with Ebrahimi, Mehdipour and Sarlak forming the midfield-trio. As for Nicaragua, Flores and Treminio could form the attacking-duo.
Iran probable starting lineup: Beiranvand, Rezaeian, Pouraliganji, Khalilzadeh, Jalali, Amiri, Ebrahimi, Mehdipour, Sarlak, Torabi, Mohebi
Nicaragua probable starting lineup: F Lopez, Tellez, Gutierrez, Fletes, Acevedo, Medina, Coronel, Galeano, Lopez, Flores, Treminio
