Owen Coyle officially confirmed that he is leaving as Jamshedpur FC head coach on Tuesday, saying he is returning home for family reasons. The Scotsman joined the Red Miners in 2020 and led them to a sixth-place finish in the first season before winning the league Shield in this season. Although JFC exited in the semi-final stage after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Kerala Blasters FC, the Men of steel have qualified for the AFC Champions League courtesy of winning the league.

“With a heavy heart, I am obviously very sad to tell you that I won’t be continuing this journey together as I have had to return home for family reasons,” Coyle said in a statement shared by the club. “However, if I am to return to India in the future, we have agreed upon that Jamshedpur will be my first choice to work at if my services are required at the time. I have a massive attachment to the club and I consider it like home.”

The 55-year-old entered the ISL in 2019 as the head coach of Chennaiyin FC and led them to the final where they lost to ATK Mohun Bagan. And then, he moved to Jamshedpur FC the following year. Having entered the ISL in 2017, JFC’s maiden top-four finish was achieved this season and it wouldn’t have been possible if not for Coyle.

To make it even sweeter, JFC finished the league stage with a record 43 points from 20 matches that included 13 wins, four draws and three defeats. Coyle’s team was built around a strong defence led by Peter Hartley. His side finished with the second most number of clean sheets in the league.

Coyle successfully found the right blend between the young Indian players and the experienced foreigners. The likes of Jitendra Singh, Boris singh, Ishan Pandita and Narender Gahlot grew as a footballer under the Scotsman’s guidance.

During his playing career, Coyle played for several clubs in England and Scotland, including the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Motherwell FC. He has previously managed English premiership teams Burnley and Bolton Wanderers
