Hong Kong is intensifying their preparations for the 2023 AFC Asia Cup by facing Thailand in a friendly match at Hong Kong Stadium on Monday. Having been defeated in their previous three encounters against Thailand, the Hong Kong team will approach the game with the aim of turning the tables and securing their first victory since September of last year.

Hong Kong suffered their second consecutive defeat last Thursday, as they were defeated 1-0 by Vietnam at Lach Tray Stadium. Que Ngoc Hai, a 30-year-old defender, secured the victory for the Golden Dragon by scoring the sole goal of the match in the 31st minute. This win marked Vietnam’s fifth consecutive friendly victory since June 2022. Before that, Hong Kong’s three-game unbeaten streak came to an end on March 28, when they experienced a 2-0 loss against Malaysia at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. Jorn Andersen’s team has now failed to win in eight of their last nine friendly matches, with five losses and three draws. Their only exception was a 2-0 triumph over Myanmar in September 2022. Despite their poor run, Hong Kong will aim to reverse their fortunes in the upcoming match against Thailand.

Thailand started the new year on a positive note by winning their seventh AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup title in January. They comfortably defeated Malaysia 3-1 in the two-legged semi-final, securing their spot in the final where they narrowly prevailed over Vietnam with a 3-2 aggregate score. However, Thailand has struggled to find success in their three matches since then. They suffered back-to-back defeats against Syria and the United Arab Emirates in March, followed by a 2-2 draw against Chinese Taipei last Friday. During the match at Kaohsiung National Stadium, Wang Ruei scored an own goal, giving the visitors the lead, but Chen Ting-yang equalized just three minutes later, resulting in a shared outcome. Mano Polking’s team enters Monday’s game without a victory in their last six away matches across all competitions.
