Since losing out to Thailand in the semi-finals of the AFF Championship, Malaysia participated in two friendlies in March in the space of few days at Stadium Sultan Ibrahim. Harimau Laya secured a narrow 1-0 win over Turkmenistan in the first match on March 23, before putting two goals past Hong Kong without reply five days later, thanks to first-half efforts from Muhammad Akhyar Rashid and Faisal Halim. After the game against Solomon Islands, Pan-Gon Kim’s men will take on Papua New Guinea in a friendly on June 20. Malaysia have recorded eight wins and two defeats from their last eight outings, and will be looking to continue their fine run of form as they look to build momentum ahead of their first AFC Asian Cup appearance since the group-stage exit in 2007.
As for Solomon Islands, their last competitive action was way back in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in March 2022, when they were thrashed 5-0 by New Zealand. After that, Bonitos recorded three consecutive friendly-wins, all in March 2023. Last time out, Solomon Islands put two goals past Fiji without reply courtesy of Gagame Feni’s brace. The Oceania outfit have won six of their last seven outings across all competitions and are currently ranked 134th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, just four places above Wednesday’s opponents.
Malaysia probable starting lineup: Hazmi, Davies, Saad, Safari, Corbin-Ong, Wilkin, Laine, Abba, Josue, Rashid, Hamlin
Solomon Islands probable starting lineup: Mango, Alick, Kalu, Kofana, Stanton, Komasi, Gagame, Tahioa, Lea’i, Feni, Nawo
