Harrogate Town will host Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Cup second round tie at Wetherby Road on Wednesday evening. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of wins in their league fixtures at the weekend, with the hosts securing a comprehensive 2-0 League Two-victory over Morecame, while the Riversiders edged past Watford 1-0 in the Championship. The visitors won this tournament back in 2002 but have failed to reach the quarter-finals in any of the previous 11 seasons, falling in the second round on four occasions since 2012. The Sulphurites, meanwhile, have failed to make it to the third round of this competition in the last three attempts.

Harrogate got the better of Morecambe in the fourth tier last time out thanks to two unanswered goals from Luke Armstrong and George Thomson. It was Sulphurites’ second league-win of the campaign from five fixtures so far, while losing the other three. Following a 1-0 success over Doncaster on the opening weekend, Simon Weaver’s men dispatched Carlisle in the EFL Cup before suffering three successive defeats in the League Two, falling to Forest Green Rovers, Tranmere Rovers and Accrington Stanley. Harrogate earned promotion to the fourth tier in 2020, and since then haven’t progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup.
Blackburn, on the other hand, claimed seventh spot in the second tier last term, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot and will be hoping for a much better season this time around. The Rovers have made a decent start to the 2023-24 season, recording three wins, one draw and a defeat from five games across all competitions so far. After kicking off their new campaign with a 2-1 second tier win over West Bromwich Albion, the Riversiders got the better of Walsall 4-3 in the EFL Cup first round tie, before suffering a slight dip in form, taking just one point from their next two Championship games against Rotherham United (2-2) and Hull City (2-1). However, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side bounced back with a narrow victory over Watford last time out thanks to Ryan Hedges’ lone goal mid-way through the second-half.
Harrogate Town probable starting lineup: Oxley, Sims, O’Connor, McDonald, Foulds, Falkingham, Sutton, Thomson, Folarin, Daly, Armstrong
Blackburn Rovers probable starting lineup: Pears, Rankin-Costello, Carter, Hyam, Brittain, Travis, Wharton, Hedges, Szmodics, Dolan, Leonard
