Guatemala will be looking to book their place in knockout stage of the 2023 Gold Cup when they take on Canada at PNC Stadium on Saturday night. Los Chapies kicked off their continental competition with a narrow 1-0 win over Cuba on Tuesday, while the Canucks were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw by Guadeloupe. The victory helped La Bicolor to move to the top of Group D, having collected three points from one match, while the Canadians are sitting one place behind them separated by two points.

Guatemala produced a dominant performance against Cuba to take all three points on Tuesday, having close to 55% of ball possession and recording seven shots on target, compared just a solitary attempt by the Cubans. Darwin Lom’s lone goal early in the second half separated the two sides at DRV PNK Stadium and helped the Chapines end their six-game winless run in the group stage of this competition. Meanwhile, that one goal in their previous outing already equalled their entire output from the 2021 group stage at this competition. If they can get the better of Canada on Saturday, La Furia Azul would be in the knockout stages of the Gold Cup for the first time since 2011.
Canada, on the other, hand, would consider themselves unlucky not to take all three points against Guadeloupe last time out. The Canucks fought back from a goal down to make the score 2-1 thanks to second half efforts from Lucas Cavallini and Richie Laryea, and looked set to secure the win, but Jacen Russell-Rowe’s 93rd-minute own goal meant that the points were shared. It was not the start john Herdman was hoping for as his side dropped points on home soil for the first time since their opening World Cup qualifying fixture against Honduras in the Octagon back in September 2021. Even though the Canucks have come into the tournament without some of their superstars- Alphonso Davies, Stephen Eustaquio and Jonathan David- Les Rogues have massive expectations on their shoulders, and therefore cannot afford to lose Saturday’s encounter. The 2021 Gold Cup semi-finalists will be hoping to get their acts together as soon as possible.
Guatemala probable starting lineup: Hagen, Herrera, Pinto, Samayoa, Morales, Castellanos, Saravia, Mendez-Laing, Sequen, Mejia, Rubin
Canada probable starting lineup: Borjan, McGraw, Kennedy, Brault-Guillard, Laryea, Bombito, Osorio, Ahmed, Nelson, Cavallini, Hoilett
