Le Gwada Boys earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Canada in their opening match on Tuesday, while Los Leones del Caribe are heading into the game on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Guatemala.
Guadeloupe will be looking to continue their impressive start to the 2023 Gold Cup campaign when they take on Guadeloupe at PNC stadium on Saturday night. Le Gwada Boys earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against one of the pre-tournament favourites Canada in their opening match on Tuesday, while Los Leones del Caribe are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Guatemala. Another defeat for Cuba on Saturday combined with a win or a draw for Guatemala versus Canada would put them out of contention for the knockout stage in this competition.
Cuba were clearly outplayed by Guatemala on Tuesday as the Chapines had close to 55% ball possession, recorded 15 shots with seven of them on target, while restricting the Cubans to just a solitary attempt on target. Darwin Lom’s lone goal three minutes into the second-half separated the two sides at DRV PNK stadium and handed a third successive defeat to the Lions of Caribbean across all competitions. As a result, Pablo Elier Sanchez’s side are now without a goal in six of their previous seven group stage encounters at the Gold Cup. Meanwhile, prior to this term, Cuba’s previous Gold Cup appearance was back in 2019 where they finished at the bottom of Group A, losing all three of their fixtures, not scoring a single goal and conceding 17 times in the process. Therefore, Les Leones del Caribe will be desperate to get on the scoresheet and put something on the points table.
Guadeloupe, on the other hand, certainly punched above their weight category to earn a dramatic draw against Canada last time out. The Gwada boys opened the scoring through Thierry Ambrose’s 23rd-minute effort, before second-half efforts from Lucas Cavallini and Richie Laryea made the score 2-1 in favour of the Canucks. Meanwhile, just when it looked like the 2026 World Cup co-hosts would take all three points, Jocelym Angloma’s men snatched a point thanks to Jacen Russell-Rowe’s own goal three minutes into the injury time. It was Les Gwada Boys’ first point in the group stage of this competition since 2009. The result also ended a seven-match losing streak for Guadeloupe in the Gold Cup, while scoring multiple goals in single group stage clash for the first time since their 2011 appearance.
