Southampton will begin their EFL Cup campaign away to Gillingham at Priestfield on Tuesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win away to Stockport County in their League Two opener at the weekend, while the Saints got the better of newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in their opening fixture of the 2023-24 Championship season. Both sides had an impressive run in this Cup competition last term, with the Gills reaching the last-16 stage where they were beaten 3-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers, while the visitors had a fairytale run, defeating Manchester City 2-0 in the quarter-final stage, but suffered a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Newcastle United in the semi-final tie.
Gillingham secured 17th place in the League One standings last term courtesy of collecting 55 points from 46 games, nine points clear of the drop zone. The Gills returned for the pre-season early in July and played seven friendlies recording four wins and three defeats in the process. And then, Neil Harris’s side made the perfect start to their 2022-23 English fourth tier campaign, securing a narrow victory over Stockport on Saturday thanks to Robbie Mckenzie’s lone goal four minutes from time. Gillingham have never won the EFL Cup title and in truth their primary objective would be to secure a top half finish in the league standings. Harris’ men will host Accrington Stanley in League Two next weekend, while they will also play Sutton United, Crawley Town and Colchester United before the end of the month.
Southampton on the other hand, ended their 11-year stay in the Premier League following bottom of the table finish in the points table last season. The Saints would be bidding to return to the English top flight at the first time of asking and they have made the perfect start to life in the Championship, defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough courtesy of Adam Strong’s ninth minute opener and Che Adams’ winner three minutes from time. The Saints have never won the League Cup, but they have progressed to the final on two occasions, including in 2017, when hey were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United. Russell Martin’s side has enough experience in their ranks to make a strong push for a return to the Premier League and they will also be looking to go a long way in the EFL Cup this time around, having reached the last four stage last term.
