Hull City will host League Two outfit Doncaster United in the First round of the EFL Cup at MKM stadium on Tuesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Norwich City in their opening match of the 2023-24 Championship season at the weekend, while Doncaster were beaten 1-0 at home by Harrogate in their English Fourth tier opener. Both sides will be bidding to cross the first hurdle having not progressed beyond the opening round of this competition last term, with the Tigers losing 2-1 to Bradford City, while Rovers were thrashed 3-0 by Lincoln City.
Hull City finished 15th in the Championship last term, collecting 58 points from 46 games. The Tigers returned for pre-season early in July and played seven friendlies this summer, recording three wins and four draws in the process. However, Liam Rosenior’s side didn’t make a great start to their 2023-24 English second tier season, losing against Norwich at the weekend despite taking the lead through Liam Delap’s 17th-minute effort at Carrow Road. The Canaries fought back to level the score through Jonathan Rowe on the stroke of half-time before Adam Idah broke the visiting fans’ heart with a 96th-minute winner. Now, Hull will be desperate to record their first victory of the campaign to build confidence in the camp and advance in the EFL Cup, before welcoming Sheffield Wednesday to the MKM stadium for the second tier contest on Saturday.
Doncaster had claimed 18th place in the 2022-23 League Two standings and will be bidding to challenge for a top half finish this time around. However, the Rovers failed to make a positive start to their League Two curtain raiser on Saturday, losing out to Harrogate courtesy of Jack Muldoon’s lone goal from the penalty spot in the 66th-minute. Therefore, Grant McCann’s side will be keen to bounce back on Tuesday and pull off an upset away at a Hull side two divisions higher in the EFL Cup before returning to league action on Saturday with a trip to Newport County.
