Forest Green rovers will host West Bromwich Albion in a pre-season friendly at the New Lawn on
Friday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, while West Brom played out a 2-2 draw against Burton Albion. Both sides have played four friendlies each this summer and have recorded only victory. Forest Green, who had a disastrous 2022-23 season, finishing at the foot of the Football League One standings, and thereby relegated to the English four tier. The Baggies, meanwhile, claimed ninth place finish in the Championship last term courtesy of collecting 66 points from 46 games.

Forest Green, who earned promotion to the English third tier courtesy of winning the 2021-22 League Two title, suffered a heart-wrenching drop at the first time of asking. The Green Devils recorded just six wins and collected 27 points from their 46 league-matches last season. They finished their 2022-23 third tier campaign with eight defeats and two draws from their final ten games. On their return for the pre-season this summer, Forest Green started off with a 1-1 draw against Melksham before losing 4-0 to Coventry City. Although, the Green Devils responded with a narrow 1-0 win over Everton U-21 on July 19, they were thrashed 5-1 by newly promoted Championship side Plymouth Argyle, three days later.
West Brom, on the other hand, couldn’t return to the Premier League at the second time of asking having finished at the ninth spot in the 2022-23 English second tier standings. At one stage the Baggies were well and truly in the hunt for a playoff spot but three defeats from their final four Championship-games meant that the club finished two points adrift of top seven. Meanwhile, the Albion returned for their pre-season with a 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury but couldn’t build on their success, losing 1-0 to Cheltenham and playing out back-to-back 2-2 draw against Saldford and Burton. The Baggies failed to defeat Burton despite taking the lead twice through Erik Pieters and Matt Phillips. After Friday’s game, the Throstles will play one more friendly against Bolton Wanderers before beginning their new Championship season against Blackburn Rovers early in August.
