Ferencvaros will host Trabzonspor in their opening group stage match of the 2022-23 Europa League campaign at the Groupama Arena on Thursday night. The hosts had earned a spot in the group stages of Europe’s second tier club competition courtesy of defeating Shamrock Rovers 4-1 on aggregate in the Europa League qualifying playoff tie last month. Trabzonspor, on the other hand, lost their Champions League qualifying playoff tie against Copenhagen 2-1 over two legs to settle for a Europa League spot.

Ferencvaros are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 6-0 win at Ujpest in a Hungarian top flight match last sunday. First half strikes from Kristoffer Zachariassen, Adama, Malouda Traore, a brace from Franck Boli gave a 4-0 lead to the Green Eagles. After the break, goals from Carlos Auzqui and Ryan Mmaee put the icing on the cake and sealed Ferencvaros’ victory. It was the Green and whites’ fifth league win from as many games, and they are now sitting on top of the Nemzeti Bajnokság I Standings with 15 points.

Trabzonspor, on the other hand, have made a decent start to their Turkish Super Lig title-defence, recording three wins from their opening five games to be sitting at the eighth position in the table. In their last match against Umraniyespor at Tayyip Erdogan stadium, the Black Sea Storm secured all three points courtesy of Mahmoud Trezeguet’s lone goal on the hour-mark.

Ferencvaros defender Lorand Paszka and Rasmus Thelander are sidelined with injuries. Civic, Kovacevic, Mmaee and Wingo are likely to form the back-four. Zechariassen is expected to lead the line with Boli and Traore in support. As for Trabzonspor, the likes of Huseyin Turkmen, Bruno Peres and Serkan Asan are nursing injuries and won’t be available for Thursday’s game. Djaniny is likely to be the target-man up front with Omur and Trezeguet occupying the flanks.
