France will play host to Chile in a friendly at Stade Velodrome on Tuesday night. The hosts will be looking to recover from a 2-0 defeat to Germany at the weekend, while the South American’s are heading into the match on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win versus Albania on Friday. Meanwhile this will be the first meeting between these tow sides since the 1-1 draw in 2011, while these two nations also met at the very first World Cup back in 1930, which La Roja won 1-0. Nevertheless, Les Bleus are one of the the most successful side’s in the international circuit, having won the World Cup in 2018 and then followed it up with a runners-up finish in 2022, while the Red One have failed to qualify for the last two editions of the World Championships.

France had a dominant Euro 2024 qualification campaign, recording seven wins and one draw to finish top of Group B, with 22 points to their name, four clear of second-placed Netherlands. However, Les Bleus lost out to Germany in a friendly on Saturday courtesy of Florian Witrz’s effort inside the opening minute and Kai Havertz’s 49th-minute strike. It was the first time Didier Deschamps’ side failed to win a home game since a UEFA Nations League defeat to Croatia in 2022. They are definitely one the favourites heading into Euro 2024, which begins mid-way through June in Germany.

Chile, on the other hand, are currently languishing at the eighth spot in the ten-team CONMEBOL 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification standings, having pocketed just five points from six games. The poor performances led to the sacking of head coach Eduardo Berizzo and Ricardo Gareca has been appointed as the new boss. The Argentine tactician got off to a perfect start on Friday, as Chile put three goals past Albania without reply at Ennio Tardini thanks to one effort each from Eduardo Vargas, Marcos Bolados and Victor Davila. Another fine showing here in Marseille should provide confidence to the Chileans ahead of the Copa America in the summer, a competition La Roja have won twice, in 2015 and 2016.
