Celta Vigo finished their 2022-23 La Liga campaign with a 2-1 win over champions Barcelona and the victory helped them to move to 43 points from 38 games, just three points clear of the relegation zone. On their return for the pre-season on July 18, the Sky blues thrashed Al-Nassr 5-0 thanks to Jorgen Larsen’s hat-trick and one goal each from Gael Alonso and Miguel Rodriguez. But O Celtina couldn’t build on their success losing out to Benfica at the weekend, courtesy of two injury time goals from Angel di Maria and Petar Musa. The club have made four signings this summer, bringing in the likes of Perez Carles and Sanchez Manu on permanent deals from AS Roma and Atletico Madrid respectively, while Bamba Jonathan has joined the club from Lille on free transfer and Dotor Carlos is the latest recruit from Real Madrid.
Lyon, on the other hand, finished at the seventh spot in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 standings courtesy of collecting 62 points from 38 games, five points short of the top five. Les Gones recorded four wins and three defeats from their final seven league-games but that wasn’t enough to secure them a European spot. Nevertheless, L’OL returned for the pre-season mid-way through this month, defeating De Treffes 2-1 before suffering back-to-back defeats against Manchester United and RWBM with an identical scoreline of 1-0. After Saturday’s game, Laurent Blanc’s men will travel to Sehurst Park for their final pre-season friendly of the summer against Premier League side Crystal Palace on August 5 before returning to France for their French top flight opener at Stade de la Meinau, eight days later.
