Valencia will continue their preparations for the upcoming La Liga season with a pre-season friendly against Deportivo Alaves at Ciudad Deportivo de Paterna-Camp 4 on Saturday. Los Che are heading into the match on the back of a 3-1 win over St. Galen last Tuesday, while Alaves secured a narrow 1-0 win over Tenerife. Valencia secured a disappointing 16th place finish in the La Liga Santander last term and it was only the fourth time in the 21st century that Los Che finished outside the top ten in the Spanish top flight points table. Alaves, meanwhile, returned to the La Liga at the first time of asking via the 2022-23 Segunda Division playoffs.

Valencia had their worst La Liga campaign in more than three decades as they were battling relegation at one point, but managed to ensure survival courtesy of collecting 42 points from 38 games, just two points clear of the drop zone. Meanwhile, Los Che have had an impressive pre-season thus far, winning all of their friendlies this summer. Baraja Ruben’s men got the better of St. Gallen last time out through Dimitri Foulquier’s equaliser and Alberto Mari’s brace. Valencia have two more friendlies lined against Alaves and Aston Villa before kicking off their 2023-24 La Liga season against Sevilla on August 11. Despite going through a rebuilding phase, the club has been fairly silent in the transfer market this summer, having signed the likes of Ozkacar Cenk and Pepelu on permanent deals from Lyon and Levante respectively, while Cordoba Iker is the latest recruit having arrived on a free transfer.
Alaves, on the other hand, secured the third and final promotion slot courtesy of overcoming the likes of Eibar and Levante in the playoffs. The Glorious One defeated Eibar 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-final playoff, before getting the better of Levante in the final thanks to Asier Villalibre’s lone goal in the 129th-minute of the second leg at Estadio Ciudad de Valencia last month. The Blue and Whites returned for the pre-season this month, getting the better of Racing Santander and Tenerife in the two friendlies played this month. In the mid-week, Garcia Plaza Luis’ men defeated Spanish second tier side Tenerife courtesy of Mamadou Sylla’s lone goal five minutes from time. After Saturday’s game, Alaves will play two more friendlies against Osasuna and Burgos at the first week of next month, before starting their Spanish top flight campaign against Cadiz on August 14.
