Canada will begin their 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign versus Guadeloupe at BMO Field on Tuesday night. The Canucks are heading into the tournament on the back of a disappointing 2-0 loss to USA in the Nations League final on June 18, while Les Gwada Boys got the better of Guyana 2-0 in their second-round playoff to secure a place in the group stage of this tournament for a second successive time. After an impressive World Cup qualification campaign that saw them securing top spot in the eight-team table, and after that going all the way to the final of the Nations League, Canada are definitely going through the best phase in their footballing history and are heading into the continental tournament as one of the favourites.

Canada qualified World Cup finals last year after a gap of almost 38 years, but got knocked out in the group stage courtesy of losing all three of their fixtures. Nevertheless, it was an invaluable experience for the Canadian footballers who are set to co-host the global event in 2026. After the World Cup in Qatar, John Herdman’s men returned to action in March, getting the better of Curacao and Honduras to qualify for the last four stage of the Nations League. Canada defeated Panama 2-0 thanks to goals from Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies in the semi-final clash on June 15, before losing out to USA in the title-decider, three days later. It has been 23 years since the Canadian men lifted a trophy, capturing the 2000 edition of the Gold Cup.
Guadeloupe, on the other hand, have made it beyond the group stage of the Gold Cup twice in 2009 and 2007. Two years ago, the Caribbean nation failed to register a point in the group phase of the continental competition, and that was their first appearance at this tournament since 2011. This time around, the Gwada Boys secured second spot in Group A League B of the Nations League to secure a spot in the qualifying playoffs, where they defeated the likes to Antigua and Barbuda, and Guyanato ear a spot in the group stage. Last Tuesday, Jocelyn Angloma’s side put two goals past Guyana in the second round of the qualification thanks to Liam Gordon’s own goal and Andrew Gravillon’s 57th-minute effort.
Canada probable starting lineup: Borjan, Adekugbe, Vitoria, Miller, Laryea, Eustaquio, Osorio, Ahmed, Hoilett, Cavallini, Shaffelburg
Guadeloupe probable starting lineup: Rouyard, Alphonse, Avinel, Gravillon, Lina, Annette, Solvet, Plumain, Rotsen, Archimede, Tell
