Costa Rica will begin their 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign versus Panama at DRV PNK Stadium on Monday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of defeats, with the Costa Ricans suffering a 3-1 loss to Ecuador in a friendly last Tuesday, while the Canal Men were beaten 1-0 by Mexico in the Nations League third place playoff. Meanwhile, Los Ticos have lost both of their group-fixtures versus Panama at the Nations League, and they have managed to register just one win since the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

Costa Rica, who had reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, got eliminated in the group stages in Qatar last year, recording one win and two defeats from three games. After that, Los Ticos had a disappointing CONCACAF Nations League campaign, recording two wins and as many defeats from four matches to finish at the second spot in Group B, with six points to their name, four adrift of Monday’s opponents. La Tricolor’s final two Nations League-games in March saw them defeating Martinique 2-1 before losing 1-0 to Panama. Costa Ricans returned to action in June, losing two friendlies against Guatemala and Ecuador. Last Tuesday, La Sele lost to Ecuador at Subaru Park despite the fact that Joel Campbell got on the scoresheet.
Panama, on the other hand, have built a reputation as a strong force in the CONCACAF region, currently sitting at the 58th spot in the latest FIFA rankings. La Marea Roja had an impressive Nations League campaign collecting ten points from four games to secure top spot in Group B, four points ahead of Costa Rica and qualified for the semi-finals, where they were beaten 2-0 by Canada. After that, the Canal Men narrowly lost out to Mexico in the third place playoff courtesy of Jesus Gallardo’s lone goal inside the opening four minutes. Meanwhile, Panama have won five of their last seven fixtures against Costa Rica, posting five clean sheets over the span while losing only one of those fixtures.
Costa Rica probable starting lineup: Chamorro, Fuller, Calvo, Waston, Vargas, Madrigal, Borges, Wilson, Nunez, Mora, Campbell
Panama probable starting lineup: Mejia, Escobar, Cummings, Miller, Barcenas, Carrasquilla, Godoy, Blackman, Fajardo, Diaz, Waterman
