Burnley defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium on Friday to secure their 25th league-win of the season, thanks to Ashley Barnes’ 12th-minute opener and Connor Roberts’ winner six minute into the hour-mark. The result sealed the Clarets’ promotion to the top tier of English football, having created a lead of 19 points over third-placed Luton Town, who have six games remaining. Meanwhile, no team has ever sealed promotion with seven games to spare before, and now Vincent Kompany’s side will be aiming to surpass Reading’s all-time points record of 106. The Clarets are unbeaten in 20 home-matches in the second tier this season, while collecting 58 points from those games at Turf Moor.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, have the second-best away record in the league this season, having taken 37 points from a possible 60 on the road. On Friday, the Blades secured a narrow 1-0 win over Wigan thanks to Iliman Ndiaye’s lone goal inside the opening eight minutes. The result extended their winning streak to four games across all competitions, while it was Paul Heckingbottom’s side’s 23rd second tier victory of the season. Meanwhile, Sheffield United managed to get the better of Burnley (5-2) in the reverse fixture in November last year courtesy of Oliver McBurnie’s brace and one goal each from Ndiaye, Jack Robinson and Anel Ahmedhodzic.
