Bolton Wanderers will host Barnsley in the first leg of their League One semi-final playoff tie at University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday. The two sides finished fifth and fourth in the English third tier standings respectively, with the visitors five points clear of their hosts. Bolton finished their league-campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers last weekend, while Barnsley suffered a 2-0 defeat against Peterborough United.  

Bolton secured their 23rd third tier victory of the season against Bristol Rovers at Memorial Stadium courtesy of goals from Shola Shoretire, Dan Nlundulu and Aaron Morey. It was their second consecutive victory, while the Wanderers have lost only one of their last ten league-matches. The Trotters have definitely had a much positive season under the stewardship of Ian Evatt, having improved on last season’s ninth-place finish while also winning the EFL Trophy, courtesy of thrashing third-tier champions Plymouth Argyle 4-0 in the final at Wembley last month. Meanwhile, Bolton have been impressive at home this term, having recorded 12 wins, four draws and two defeats from their last 18 games across all competitions at University of Bolton Stadium.

Barnsley, on the other hand, have won only one of their last five away-games in the third tier, while losing twice along the way. The Tykes had a disappointing end to the league campaign, recording defeats against Peterborough and Ipswich Towne either side of a thrilling 4-4 draw against MK Dons, from their last three games. Nevertheless, a strong run of form between January and March, in which they put together a 12-game unbeaten run including ten wins, helped Michael Duff’s side secure a fourth-place finish, with 86 points to their name. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire outfit have won 26 League One games this term and their last success came against Oxford United last month thanks to two unanswered goals from Slobodan Tedic.
