Birmingham, who had finished 17th in the Championship last term, nine points clear of the drop zone, headed into the 2023-24 season with a degree of optimism following an impressive pre-season that saw them recording four wins and a defeat from five friendlies. Last Saturday, John Eustace’s side kicked off their English second tier season away to Swansea and went ahead on the stroke of half-time through Siriki Dembele’s debut goal, but couldn’t hold on to the slender lead as Jerry Yates equalised for the Swans 24 minutes from time. On the back of a creditable result in Swansea.com stadium, the Blues travelled to Cheltenham Town for the first round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday and secured a comfortable victory thanks to Juninho Bacuna’s first-half brace.
Leeds, on the other hand, fought back from 2-0 down to earn a point against Cardiff City at Elland Road last Saturday thanks to Liam Cooper’s 49th-minute effort and a dramatic equaliser five minutes into the injury time by Crysencio Summerville. Farke’s men then played host to Shrewsbury in the EFL Cup first round fixture on Wednesday, and secured a come-from-behind victory courtesy of second-half efforts from Joe Gelhardt and pascal Struijk. The Peacocks will now be keen to build on their opening two outings and register their first league-win of the season.
