Barcelona will play host to Girona in a high voltage La Liga fixture at Estadio Olimpic Lluis Companys on Sunday night. Gironistes have been the surprise package in the Spanish top flight this season, picking up 38 points from 15 games to sit at the second spot in the standings, level on points with leaders Real Madrid, while the hosts occupy third position, four points behind their opponents. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories, with Blaugrana edging past Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the league last weekend, while the visitors secured a 5-2 Copa del Rey victory over Orihuela in the mid-week.

Barcelona produced a solid performance against Atletico last time out to take all three points thanks to on-loan Atletico striker Joao Felix’s lone goal in the first-period. It was Blaugrana’s third successive home-win across all competitions, while it was their first clean sheet from last five outings. The reigning champions boast a record of 10 wins, four draws and one defeat from 15 league games this season. Although Xavi has done a decent job so far to keep his side in the top three, the Catalan outfit suffered their lone defeat against Real Madrid in the El Clasico towards the end of October and also dropped points against the likes of Getafe, Granada, Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano. Sunday’s encounter provides a glorious opportunity for Barca to close the gap on top two to just a solitary point.

Girona, on the other hand, have done remarkably well to sit level on points well leaders Los Blancos. White and Reds have recorded 12 wins, two draws and one defeat from 15 top flight outings thus far. Michel’s side secured their latest league win against Valencia last weekend thanks to Cristhian Stuani’s late double after Hugo Duro broke the deadlock for Los Che ten minutes into the second-half. Three days later, Stuani scored his second brace in as many games as Gironistes defeated Orihuela in the Copa del Rey second round tie. Pablo Torres, Portu and Valery Fernandez also got on the scoresheet for White and Reds at Estadio Municipal Los Acros. Girona are now undefeated in their previous nine games in all competitions, recording eight victories in the process.
