Barcelona will be desperate to get back to wining ways in the La Liga when they host Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou in a much anticipated fixture on the Spanish Calendar on Sunday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a goalless draw away to Getafe last weekend, while Atletico got the better of Almeria 2-1. Blaugrana are currently occupying top spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 73 points from 29 games, eight points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, who have played a game more. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the third position, with 60 points to their name, 12 clear of fifth played Real Betis.

Barcelona shared the spoils against relegation-threatened Getafe last Sunday despite having more than 65% of ball possession and recording 15 shots with three of them on target. With just two points taken from their last two outings, Barca’s title charge has certainly slowed down. Nevertheless, Xavi’s side have won 23 top flight games this season and their latest success came against rock bottom side Elche (4-0) at the start of this month thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s brace and one goal each from Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres. Barca have already been eliminated from the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, and are left with only the La Liga to concentrate on for the remainder of the season. The Catalonia outfit have the best home-record in the top flight this season, picking up 36 points from their 14 matches at Camp Nou. Meanwhile, Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 win over Atletico in the reverse fixture in January thanks to Ousmane Dembele’s first-half effort.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, secured all three points against Almeria last time out courtesy of Antoine Griezmann’s first-half brace. It was their 18th top flight victory of the season. Diego Simeone’s side are in stunning form, having not tasted defeat in their last ten outings, while winning nine games in the period. Los Colchoneros have also been strong on their travels, collecting 30 points from a possible 42. The Red and Whites are 13 points adrift of the summit and with nine matches remaining their primary focus would be to chase down Real Madrid for second spot, with Los Blancos certain to have focus elsewhere.
