Azerbaijan and Estonia, both part of Group F, meet at Dalga Arena on Saturday in a crucial Euro 2024 qualifying match. With Belgium, Sweden, and Austria leading the group, Azerbaijan and Estonia consider this encounter a must-win game to enhance their chances of qualifying. These minnows understand the importance of securing victories against each other, as it provides an opportunity to earn valuable points and potentially climb up the group standings. With powerhouse nations ahead, Azerbaijan and Estonia aim to showcase their strength, close the gap, and increase their chances of securing a spot in the Euro 2024 tournament. The match promises to be a pivotal moment in their qualification campaigns.

Azerbaijan had a disastrous start to their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in March, suffering defeats against Austria and Sweden and conceding a total of nine goals. Following a 4-1 loss to Austria, they faced 5-0 by Sweden, leaving them with one of the worst defensive records in the competition. Gianni De Biasi’s team had a 13-game winless streak between June 2021 and June 2022 but ended the previous year on a positive note with five consecutive victories, including wins over Belarus, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and North Macedonia. However, the defeats against Austria and Sweden in March exposed the gap in quality between Azerbaijan and the top teams in their group. It’s worth noting that Azerbaijan had a similar record in their previous Euro 2020 and 2022 World Cup qualifiers, with one draw and seven losses in both campaigns.

In contrast, Estonia has only played one Euro 2024 qualifier so far, but they currently sit above Azerbaijan in the group standings due to their superior goal difference. They find themselves three points behind Belgium and Sweden. Despite having only 34% possession in their match against Austria in March, Estonia came close to securing a memorable victory in Linz when Rauno Sappinen scored in the first half. However, the hosts scored two late goals to snatch the victory. In January, Thomas Haberli’s team had positive results in friendly matches, holding Iceland to a 1-1 draw and defeating Finland 1-0. They also put up a strong performance in a narrow 1-0 friendly defeat against Hungary in March, showing that they can challenge stronger European teams. Looking at their recent performances, Estonia has lost only two of their last ten matches across all competitions.
