The 2022 FIFA World Cup returns to action this week, with Australia taking on Denmark in a Group D clash at the Al Janoub Stadium on Wednesday. Australia is currently second in their group and has created an excellent opportunity to advance to the knockout stages. The Socceroos stunned Tunisia with a 1-0 victory in their previous match and will look to repeat the feat this week. Denmark, on the other hand, is third in their group and has yet to find their footing at the World Cup. The Danes were defeated 2-1 by France last week and will need to bounce back in this match.

Denmark has a slight advantage over Australia, having won two of the four matches played between the two teams, compared to Australia’s one win. Australia has only played Denmark once at the FIFA World Cup, a 1-1 draw in the group stage in 2018. Denmark is winless in their last five FIFA World Cup matches, with their only victory coming against Peru in the tournament’s opening game in 2018. Australia could qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for only the second time in their history.

Australia has only won one match against Denmark, a 1-0 friendly victory in 2010. They have lost eight of their 11 FIFA World Cup matches against European opponents and has failed to keep a clean sheet in any of these games. Here are some of the key battles to look out for from what could be a feisty encounter.

Mitchell Duke vs Simon Kjaer

Despite only scoring only goal so far in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Australian striker Mitchell Duke has the potential to be a real thorn in the side of of the Danes. Mitchell scored the only goal in the men in yellow’s slim 1-0 victory over Tunisia which gave them a huge chance to make it through to the round of 16 of the world cup this year. However, Denmark have a rock in the middle of their defense to sort out their Mitchell problem. That rock goes by the name of Simon Kjaer. The AC Milan defender is fresh off winning the Serie A last season and will be looking to help his team make it through to the knockout stages.

Craig Goodwin vs Andreas Christensen

Craig Goodwin shocked defending champions France when he got on the scoresheet within ten minutes in their first match of Group D. Although his team suffered a hefty 4-1 defeat, Goodwin’s goal was one of the highlights of the group and he will be looking to add to his tally against Denmark. However, it will not be easy getting past the Danish defense which will have a seasoned Andreas Christensen among its ranks.

Christian Eriksen vs Aaron Mooy

Aaron Mooy is the most important player in Australia’s lineup. The Celtic midfielder controls the game from the centre of the field, supplying goods to the attack while also keeping the fort safe. He was in excellent form in the most recent match against Tunisia, with 12 interceptions and a 70% success rate in ground duels. Christian Eriksen’s career was turned upside down after the tragic incident at the Euros. He went from nearly retiring to becoming Denmark’s most important player at the World Cup. Eriksen, despite having yet to demonstrate his class at this World Cup, can bring some serious heat to the game against Australia.
