The final game of Group A in the 2022 FIFA World Cup saw Senegal storm into the last 16 as they beat Ecuador 2-1. Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring with a penalty towards the end of the first half. The South American nation equalized in the second half thanks to a fine goal by Moises Caciedo in the 67th minute. A draw would have sent Ecuador to the knockout stages, knowing which the men in yellow celebrated with jubilation. However, their joy was short-lived as defender Kalidou Koulibaly fired in a crucial goal from a set piece in the 70th minute.

The remaining 20 minutes of the contest were nervy and unpredictable from a Senegalese perspective. For Ecuadorians, however, it was a disappointing night as their team seemed toothless in front of the goal. The players crumbled to the ground with tears in their eyes as they will make their exit from the world cup.

For Senegal, it was a moment that will be etched in history as it is only the second time they have qualified for the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup. The nation became the first from Africa to do so at the 2022 edition of the tournament. Here is how twitter reacted to the African nation reaching their first round of 16 in 20 years.
