Augsburg will host Bayern Munich in the second round of the DFB-Pokal at the WWK Arena on Wednesday night. The Bavarians have won this competition a record 20 times during their illustrious history, while Augsburg have never reached the final. Meanwhile, Fuggerstadter’s best ever effort in the cup competition remains reaching the semi-final during the 2009-10 season. Augsburg thrashed BW Lohne 4-0 in the first round of the competition, back in July. Arne Maier, Frederick Jensen, Florian Niederlechner and Maurice Malone netted for Fuggerstadter at Heinz-Dettmer-Stadion. Meanwhile, Enrico Maaseen’s side have made a decent start to the 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign, having recorded four wins and one draw from 10 games, to be sitting at the 12th position in the standings. Augsburg have already recorded a victory against the Bavarians this season at the WWK Arena through Mergim Berisha’s winner last month.
Bayern, on the other hand, have recorded four wins and one draw since their defeat to Augsburg on September 17. Julian Naglesmann’s side have managed to score a whopping 20 goals in their last five games across all competitions, while conceding just four times. Last time out against Freiburg, the Bavarians netted five times without reply courtesy of strikes from Serge Gnabry, Eric Maxim-Choupo-Moting, Leroy Sane, Sadio Mane and Marcel Sabitzer. It was Bayern’s fifth league-win of the campaign, taking their tally to 19 points from 10 games, just four points adrift of leaders United Berlin.
Augsburg’s injury list consists of Andre Hahn, Rafal Gikiewicz, Felix, Uduokhai, Reece Oxford, Niklas Dorsch, Noah Sarenren Bazee and Tobias Strobl. Berisha is likely to partner Demirovic up front with Baumgartlinger and Gruezo pulling the strings in the midfield. As for Bayern, goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer is sidelined with a shoulder injury. Choupo-Moting is expected to spearhead the attack, with Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Tel in support.
Augsburg probable starting lineup: Koubek, Framberger, Gumny, Winther, Pedersen, Caliguiri, Baumgartlinger, Gruezo, Vargas, Demirovic, Berisha
Bayern Munich probable starting lineup: Ulrich, Mazraoui, Pavard, Upamecano, Stanisic, Sabitzer, Gravenberch, Gnabry, MusialaTel, Choupo-Moting
