Augsburg will host Bayer Leverkusen in a Bundesliga fixture at WWK Arena on Friday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of defeats in their previous outings. The hosts were beaten 3-1 by SC Freiburg last Saturday, while Leverkusen suffered a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, a day later. As of now, Augsburg are languishing at the 14th spot in the German top flight standings, having collected 18 points from as many games, just two points clear of the drop zone, while the visitors are sitting at the ninth position, with 24 points to their name.

Augsburg were clearly outclassed by a well drilled Frieburg last Saturday. Michael Gregoritsch and Lucas Holer netted either side of Mergim Berisha’s penalty to provide a 2-1 lead to Freiburg at half-time. Fuggerstadter pushed hard for an equaliser but Philipp Lienhart’s late effort sealed the win for Freiburg. It was Augsburg’s 10th league-defeat of the campaign. Prior to that, Enrico Maassen’s side claimed their first home win in the German top flight this season by beating Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0, through Berisha’s 82nd-minute strike. 

Leverkusen, on the other hand, saw their five game winning streak come to an end after losing to Dortmund last weekend. Leverkusen dominated the proceedings with 21 shots, six of them on target, but Dortmund managed to find the back of the net twice through Karim Adeyemi’s 33rd-minute strike and Edmond Tapsoba’s own goal, eight minutes into the second half. Despite tasting defeat for the first time in almost three months, head coach Xabi Alonso will be delighted with the progress his players have made. The Eternal Bridesmaids are sitting eight points adrift of the sixth and final European qualification spot. Meanwhile, Leverkusen will take on Monaco in the last 32 of the Europa League later this month.

Augsburg forward Ermedin Demirovic is suspended for Friday’s match, having received a fifth booking of the season against Freiburg last time out. Therefore Mads Pedersen might operate on the left flank, with Berisha and Beljo forming the attacking-duo. Meanwhile the injury list consists of Ruben Vargas, Andre Hahn, Irvin Cardona, Reece Oxford, Lago and Tobias Strobl. As for Leverkusen, the likes of Charles Aranguiz, Andrey Lunev, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Patrik Schick are occupying the treatment room. Wirtz might lead the line, with Diaby and Adli in support.
