Athletic Bilbao will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the La Liga when they host Cadiz at San Mames Barria on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Celta Vigo last Sunday, while Cadiz defeated Mallorca 2-0, a day earlier. Despite the win, the visitors are still languishing at the 18th spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 19 points from as many games, just one adrift of safety. The Lions, meanwhile, have dropped to the ninth position, with 26 points to their name, seven behind Real Betis, who are occupying sixth and final European qualification spot.

Athletic Bilbao defeated Valencia 3-1 on January 26 to enter the last-4 stage of the Copa del Rey. Ernesto Valverde’s side secured the win, courtesy of strikes from Iker Munian, Nico Williams and Mikel Vesga. However, the Lions are winless in the top flight since the end of October and have picked up just five points from their last five league matches. Athletic shared the spoils against Betis and Osasuna on December 29 and January 9 respectively before suffering three straight La Liga defeats to Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Cadiz.
Cadiz, on the other hand, moved close to safety courtesy of defeating mid-table side Mallorce in their last outing. Theo Bongona scored the opener inside the opening 10 minutes, before Alex Fernandez doubled the lead by converting a spot kick, seven minutes from the break. It was the Pirates’ fourth league-win of the season. Meanwhile, 11th-placed Almeria and Cadiz are separated by just three points. Sergio Gonzalez’s side have now lost just one of their last five in Spain’s top flight, and they have managed to pick up points in four of their nine away La Liga matches during the 2022-23 campaign.
