East Bengal defender Abhishek Ambekar has hailed Atletico Madrid as favourites to clinch the ongoing edition of the La Liga. Atletico take on Real Valladolid CF in their final league encounter, with a win enough to see them emerge as Champions. However, arch-rivals Real Madrid also stand a decent chance of winning the La Liga, in case of any result barring a win. A draw or a defeat followed by a win for Real, will see them emerge victorious due to a superior head-to-head record.

“Atletico Madrid have been excellent in the La Liga this season. They have gone about recording wins at an impressive rate, with the additions of Luis Suarez and Marcos Llorente working out brilliantly. Suarez has sent a strong message to those who wrote him off, delivering sublime performances for Atletico who showed faith. I would back them to get the job done against Valladolid. Diego Simeone is a master at delivering results when it matters the most, which is itself a massive boost,” he said in an exclusive interaction with Sportslumo.

Karim Benzema’s influence

At the same time, Ambekar did not rule out the possibility of Real winning the title, considering the surprises in store for fans in the incredible world of football. Real Madrid take on Villareal in their final league encounter, with the latter just one triumph away from winning the Europa League. However, the defender backed French superstar Karim Benzema to deliver another incredible performance, having recently earned a spot in the French squad for the upcoming Euro 2020.

“Benzema will certainly be motivated by his inclusion in the Euro 2020 squad, after a long time. Manager Didier Deschamps has shown faith in his abilities letting bygones be bygones, and there can be nothing bigger than an opportunity in the national team for a player. He will be eager to cap off the season on a high, giving Real Madrid the best chance possible to win the La Liga,” concluded Ambekar.

The La Liga race will come down to the wire, with Simeone’s men currently on top with 83 points and Real Madrid second with 81. Atletico defeated Osasuna in their previous game by a 2-1 margin, which will be a source of motivation. Valladolid need a win to stay in the top-flight of Spanish football.
